A Brand That’s Crushing It
New Belgium Brewing should not still be this cool. They sold in 2019; and most breweries that sell out become boring shells of their old selves. But, New Belgium, they refused to let the story die. They doubled down on what actually mattered: people, purpose, transparency. Instead of letting the acquisition flatten them, they leaned harder into the stuff that made them different from day one. They still put their brewers, lab techs, and tasters front and centre. They still tell you who they are, not just what’s in the glass.
Why It Works
Focusing on the people behind the business builds trust and authenticity. You can buy ad placement, but you can't buy genuine trust. You can’t fake people. When you see one of their posts, it doesn’t feel like “marketing”, it feels like a new friend pulling you aside and saying, “this is how we did this cool thing”. They show you the faces of the crew making the product. They anchor their identity in action, not slogans. Because authentic human connection is the one thing you can't buy.
The Lesson
Don’t build your entire story on one fragile detail. If your brand promise is just a gimmick, family-owned, small-batch, whatever, the second it changes, you’re toast. Build something bigger. Build a story powered by people and values that don’t evaporate with one update. Show the humans. Show the fight. Show the messy reality of why you exist. At the end of the day, you can put a price on a company, but you can't put a price on what makes a brand real.
